PRINCIPLES OF KARATE 

The main principles of karate revolve around a set of core values and philosophies that guide us in training and our daily lives.
While different styles and schools may have slight variations, the following principles are commonly emphasized in karate:

Respect

Martial arts strongly enforces a high respectful environment not only for themselves but for other students. From the minute a student sets foot into the dojo, they must follow social etiquette when interacting with their instructors and their fellow peers. Whether it’s bowing to their masters or supporting other students, practitioners are expected to show respect at every opportunity.

By showing respect to each other at all times, students help each other achieve a common goal as they learn a new life skill.

Self-confidence

When Mastering the various martial arts skills & techniques it can be extremely rewarding and can work wonders for a students confidence levels. When a student reaches a new level it gives them a sense of achievement accomplishment that is a vital  for developing there self-esteem and strong mentality. Karate encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and try new things as they progress through there karate journey, students will carry this strength and discipline throughout their lives.

Control 

 Karate emphasizes the concept of control, both in terms of physical movements and in interactions with others. Practitioners strive for controlled execution of techniques, ensuring accuracy, precision, and minimizing the risk of injury. Off the mat, control extends to maintaining composure and avoiding unnecessary conflict.

Focus

Focus is an integral part of Martial Arts listening and concentration skills are put to the test when it comes to mastering techniques and abilities.

At a young age, students are likely to have a relatively low attention span. This is why getting them to learn the importance of listening and and carrying out instructions is important. There are few better activities than martial arts to help them achieve this, even if they’ve had problems focusing in the past. As an example, karate has been proven to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD, primarily through the training of focus and having a discipline.

Discipline

Martial arts is a great way for a student to gain a strong sense of discipline in a number of ways. It gives them emotional control and allows them to set personal boundaries. By practicing martial arts they’ll quickly get to grips with how to control their emotions and channel them in a positive and effective way.

Perseverance

Karate teaches the value of perseverance, urging practitioners to persist in the face of difficulties or setbacks. By embracing a determined and resilient mindset, individuals can overcome obstacles and continually improve their skills.

Social skills

Throughout their lives, children will find themselves in unfamiliar environments among people they don’t know. Therefore, taking part in martial arts training as part of a group prepares them for this challenge.

The earlier they can adjust to new surroundings, the easier it will become for them to interact with others. Not only will children learn about teamwork through practicing martial arts, they will discover the true value of friendship. They will also develop communication skills, which can be difficult for children who are naturally shy or have behavioral problems.

Balance

Martial arts has a big influence on improving your balance, its a crucial skill to have, as you train you will notice a great development in how well your able to move and feel comfortable in different positions, for example

standing or exercising on one leg is a classic martial arts balance training technique, as are the ‘air kicks’ we see on TV and in movies. Achieving good balance at an early age will give a child a healthy posture later in life. It will also help them avoid problems such as muscle weakness.

Integrity

Karate places great emphasis on honesty, sincerity, and moral character. Practitioners strive to maintain integrity both within the dojo and in their daily lives, upholding a strong sense of ethics and virtuous behavior

Co-ordination

Karate improves coordination by making students more mindful about their bodies; how they move; and how the body functions. Karate helps children develop higher coordination skills through moves such as kicking, jumping and turning quickly. The sport also assists children developing fine motor skill such as the correct foot and hand placement. Martial arts also improves coordination by training the mind to memorize and retain movements. Some coordination issues are not caused by physical limitations. Martial arts improve coordination in children by teaching children the basic moves that are required to execute a complex move step-by-step.

Health

Fitness and general health are a massive part of Martial Arts, as Karate is a physical sport, you will find its a full body workout lower body, upper body and core are all muscles used when partaking in a martial art, having a solid core and good cardiovascular health will help additionally when starting, however a few weeks in you will start to notice your fitness heavily increase. While you may not look like Bruce Lee the health benefits provided by martial arts will help promote good fitness habits and focus outside of the dojo as well as within.

Continuous Learning

Karate is a lifelong journey of learning and self-improvement. Practitioners are encouraged to embrace a mindset of continuous growth and development. This involves seeking new knowledge, refining techniques, and exploring deeper levels of understanding in the art.
